The Secret Genocide Archive
The New York Times > Opinion > Op-Ed Columnist: The Secret Genocide Archive
I think that I'm as guilty as anyone else about ignoring the tragedy that is occurring in Darfur, an area of western Sudan. I've tried to keep up with what little information has been printed about the situation. I can tell you that the janjaweed are arab militia men that are backed by the government. But like almost everyone else I've remained ignorant of what's actually happening. I keeping thinking, in my typical Pollyana way, that the US government is actively pursuing an end to the genocide that is occurring through diplomatic measures. I can't name one actual step that we are taking, but I've read vague comments in the New York Times about us doing something. I've also read that the UN refuses to classify the horrors in Darfur as genocide, and therefore, are not required to take preemptive action.
But maybe now it really is time for us, the American people, to do something. Read this article, write your congressmen, sign petitions, do something. If you want a great place to start, check out http://www.savedarfur.org
